MESSAGE FROM MARC G. SERRÉ YOUR NICKEL BELT MP

June marked the official start of summer. June also focused on awareness by inviting us to take part in recognizing Pride month and Indigenous people’s day among other causes. With devastating news surround residential schools coming to light, I invite all constituents to deepen their knowledge of Canadian history surrounding our Indigenous peoples. Nickel Belt – Greater Sudbury is fortunate to share land with three First Nations, Wahnapitae First Nation, Atikameksheng Anishnawbek and Mattagami First Nation who continue to help us learn and become better allies.

Here is a glimpse of just some of the activities, outreach and work that took place in June.

MP SERRÉ IS WORKING HARD FOR NICKEL BELT – GREATER SUDBURY:

  • Coordination with constituency office staff to remain updated on the local concerns of Nickel Belt – Greater Sudbury residents
  • MP Serré participates in a Hybrid House of Commons schedule between the riding and in Ottawa
  • MP Serré fulfills Parliamentary Secretary (PS) duties outlined by the Minister of Natural Resources, the Honourable Seamus O’Regan and his team
  • MP Serré continues to work collaboratively with his MP colleagues to address the pressing needs of the local and national not-for-profit sector
  • MP Serré had calls and meetings with various stakeholders, organizations, businesses and constituents from across Nickel Belt – Greater Sudbury
  • MP Serré, as a member of the Official languages committee, participated in the Federal Support for French-language Postsecondary Institutions in a Minority Situation deliberation regarding Laurentian University
  • MP Serré stood in the House of Commons to ask for unanimous consent to present a petition that has received more than 800 signatures on the topic of indigenous rights in Northern Ontario
  • MP Serré, as a member of the Standing Committee on the Status of Women, participated in meetings to adopt the report concerning challenges faced by women living in rural communities and how to further opportunities
  • MP Serré participated in a community vigil in Nickel Belt – Greater Sudbury to mourn the Muslim family lost to a senseless hate motivated crime in London, Ontario.
  • MP Serré participated in a mural unveiling and flag raising ceremony as part of West Nipissing Pride June program of activities in support of LGBTQ2S+ rights
  • MP Serré participated in a roundtable on Canada-US cooperation on critical minerals, hosted by the Canadian American Business Council in his role as Parliamentary Secretary
  • MP Serré stood in the House of Commons to recognize Peru’s 200th anniversary to celebrate the mutually beneficial aspects of the long-standing friendship and trade relationship between countries
  • MP Serré stood in the House of Commons to recognize the importance of la St-Jean Baptise and to congratulate Collège Boréal in Nickel Belt – Greater Sudbury on their 25th anniversary and commitment to quality education
  • MP Serré recorded and shared personalized videos to acknowledge and congratulate students in Nickel Belt – Greater Sudbury who persevered and graduated during unprecedented circumstances
  • MP Serré, as Chair of the Canadian Section of the ParlAmericas, participated in the 5th Gathering of the Parliamentary Network on Climate Change and the 56th annual Board of Directors meeting
  • MP Serré participated in the Centre de Santé Communautaire du Grand Sudbury’s annual general meeting which took place during la St-Jean Baptiste
  • MP Serré took part in the Seniors Save Lives plasma donation event
  • MP Serré met with Cambrian College President Bill Best to keep the pulse on the opportunities and development taking place at the college
  • MP Serré met with Colombia’s Ambassador to Canada Jorge Londoño-de-la-Cuesta
  • MP Serré met with Cathy Orlando, Citizens' Climate International's Program Director regarding the impact of the health care system on climate change

Funding opportunities announced that benefit our communities:

  • MP Serré announced $675,000 to create jobs and maximize economic opportunities in Northeastern Ontario’s Francophone communities. Find full details here.

  • MP Serré, as Parliamentary Secretary announced $1.8m for several greenhouse gas emissions reduction projects in northern Ontario including Espanola, Bracebridge, Timmins and Kenora through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. Find full details here.
  • MP Serré participated in the announcement of a $16 million bundle rapid response stream announcement with the Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister of Women, Gender Equality and Rural Economic Develpoment benefitting 27 projects across Ontario to further access to reliable high-speed Internet.
