NICKEL BELT – GREATER SUDBURY – Marc G. Serré, Member of Parliament for Nickel Belt, will attend the 2024 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit from November 15-17, 2024. The summit brings together leaders from 21 countries to discuss global trade, sustainable growth, and international cooperation.
Canada's participation in APEC is key to fostering diplomatic ties, enhancing trade and investment, and ensuring Canadian industries remain competitive and innovative worldwide.
Northern Ontario’s resource-based industries, which play a major role in supplying critical minerals for the green economy, are a key area where Canada can learn from the APEC forum. The region’s approach to balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility and innovation is something MP Serré believes can help guide Canadian strategies.
"APEC is all about creating long-term partnerships and exploring innovative solutions to global challenges," said MP Serré. "It’s crucial that we bring home ideas and practices that will benefit our local industries, particularly in areas like mining, clean energy, and technological development."
MP Serré’s experience as President of the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas has given him valuable opportunities to engage in international discussions on economic and sustainability issues, laying a strong foundation for his participation at APEC. This work has allowed him to connect with leaders across the Americas, sharing ideas on global challenges that have significant impacts both in Canada and around the world.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will also be participating in APEC, which underscores the importance of these discussions for Canada’s broader economic goals. With this year’s theme, 'People, Business, Prosperity,' APEC offers Canada a chance to strengthen international partnerships, drive inclusive growth, and to help make sure prosperity is shared across more sectors.
“As an MP and Parliamentary Secretary to both the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources and the Minister of Official Languages, my job is to listen to experts and community members. I’m constantly learning from their perspectives to help support our economy, prioritize sustainability, and ensure affordability—ultimately, always with the people of Nickel Belt at the heart of it,” added MP Serré. “Attending APEC is a unique opportunity to bring back valuable ideas that can improve policies to reduce trade barriers, promote economic growth and ultimately to create new opportunities for Canadians,” he concluded.
