COVID-19 has impacted Canada socially and economically in an unprecedented manner and Nickel Belt – Greater Sudbury has not been spared. Our government has been there to listen to the concerns of individuals, businesses, and organizations to implement appropriate emergency economic response measures.
As the warmer months begin and we start to see our COVID-19 restrictions slowly loosen and local businesses reopen, it is important to remember to follow best practices outlined by local public health officials and the Government of Canada.

MP SERRÉ REMAINS HARD AT WORK FOR NICKEL BELT – GREATER SUDBURY:
- Weekly calls with constituency cffice staff to remain updated on the local concerns of Nickel Belt – Greater Sudbury residents
- Participate in regular caucus calls and participating in virtual House of Commons meetings
- During COVID-19 committee meetings MP Serré asked a question to the Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister of Rural Economic Development, on Canada’s broadband connectivity strategy where she elaborated on Canada’s Connectivity Strategy and Funding
- Participated in varied Chamber of Commerce townhall events with multiple colleagues and community officials to shed light on government economic response measures
- Participate in various virtual meetings with mayors, councilors, businesses and individuals in all corners of the riding to find out their priorities for further advocacy
- Participated in a Fridays for Future virtual Climate Change Rally
- Participated in meetings with the Sudbury Seniors’ Advisory Group and the The Urban Indigenous Sacred Circle
- Presented to International audiences as Chair of ParlAmericas on the importance of Canada’s continued democracy and transparency with public during the COVID-19 crisis
- As per the established Health and Safety guidelines MP Serré will participate in Hybrid Parliament virtually to ensure the voices of Nickel Belt – Greater Sudbury are heard
SUPPORT IN OUR COMMUNITY
Earlier this month our Government announce $350 million for the Emergency Community Supportfund. Working with the United Way North East Ontario MP Serré was able highlight the great need for assistance across the entire riding in an effort to support the most vulnerable in Nickel Belt – Greater Sudbury. We are happy to announce that through this fund Northern Ontario received $158,534 including support right here in our riding:
- $2,181 for the Municipality of French River in partnership with the Age Friendly Committee Club Richelieu to offer care baskets to 50 seniors in the region
- $1,156 for the Municipality of St.-Charles in partnership with Warren and District Lions Club to offer care baskets to 30 vulnerable seniors in the region
- $2,181 for the Municipality of Markstay-Warren in partnership with Warren and District Lions Club to provide care baskets to 50 vulnerable seniors in the region
- $2,500 for Valley View Community church to help pay for travel and PPE for volunteers which enables them to deliver groceries to seniors/families in partnership with Metro and Helping Hands Family Missions
- $5,000 to the City of Greater Sudbury in partnership with the Onaping Falls Lions Club to help with meal prep and delivery for seniors in Onaping Falls
- $3,000 to the City of Greater Sudbury in partnership with the Valley East Lions Club to identify low income seniors in Valley East and offer them food gift cards

TIPS ON STAYING SAFE AND HEALTHY
Physical distancing
Together, we can slow the spread of COVID-19 by making a conscious effort to keep a physical distance between each other.
This includes:
- avoiding nonessential gatherings
- avoiding common greetings, such as handshakes
- avoiding crowded places such as concerts, arenas, conferences and festivals
- limiting contact with people at higher risk like older adults and those in poor health
- keeping a distance of at least 2 arm lengths (approximately 2 metres) from others.
