NICKEL BELT – GREATER SUDBURY - Marc G. Serré, Member of Parliament for Nickel Belt, was in Brazil for the 2024 G20 Summit, joining global leaders and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to address key economic challenges. The G20 brings together the countries with the largest economies in the world and the members meet annually to discuss economic, political and social initiatives. As a strong advocate for his constituents, MP Serré attended with a focus on sharing Northern Ontario’s priorities and accomplishments.
Beyond inclusivity and sustainability, the forum addressed global financial security, economic development, health, governance, international security, and more. Canada’s involvement in these discussions is vital, and the country plays a well-respected role at this annual summit.
As Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, the Minister of Official Languages, and Chair of the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas, MP Serré regularly engages in global discussions. These roles have helped him bring valuable insights back to Northern Ontario.
“The G20 Summit is another key opportunity to tie global solutions to local needs. Northern Ontario plays a leadership role in sustainable growth, innovation, and energy transition, and it’s important our unique perspective is considered,” said MP Serré.
Strong investment, business, and mining ties between Brazil, the Sudbury region, and Northern Ontario make collaboration between people and companies from these areas crucial. This partnership drives economic development and advances the mining and energy sectors, further strengthening Northern Ontario’s global presence.
MP Serré’s participation at the G20 followed his recent attendance at the APEC Summit. At APEC, MP Serré met with the President of the Canada-Peru Chamber of Commerce and took part in three bilateral meetings with the Presidents of Chile, Indonesia, and Peru. He also took part in discussions on critical minerals, renewable energy, agriculture, and navigating the opportunities and challenges presented by the new Trump administration, among other key issues.
At the G20, MP Serré actively collaborated with global leaders and partners, including meetings with:

I hear directly from constituents about their concerns on affordability, the environment, and the economy, and the G20 provides a productive environment to explore new solutions to these challenges," MP Serré added.
“More than ever, economies are increasingly interconnected and globalized, driven by the rapid advancement of digital technologies that have reshaped how trade, communication, and innovation happens across borders. Cooperation is key and I’ll continue to advocate for Nickel Belt’s fair share,” he concluded.
