IMPORTANT– DISABILITY TAX CREDIT MISINFORMATION

The disability tax credit (DTC) is a non-refundable tax credit that helps people with disabilities, or their supporting family member, reduce the amount of income tax they may have to pay. If you have a severe and prolonged impairment, you may apply for the credit. If you are approved, you may claim the credit at tax time.

By reducing the amount of income tax you may have to pay, the DTC offsets some of the extra costs related to the impairment.

Our office has been notified that there are third-party services targeting people when it comes to applying for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC). These companies offer to help individuals complete and submit their applications, but they often charge hefty fees—sometimes up to a large percentage of the tax refund received. It’s important to note that DTC applications can be completed for free by individuals themselves.  A portion of the application needs to be completed by a healthcare provider. Our constituency staff can also supports individuals with their applications at no charge.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) provides clear guidelines and forms for applying for the DTC, and healthcare professionals can certify the disability.

It's important to raise awareness about this issue to protect people from being taken advantage of, especially since they might already be on fixed incomes and looking to maximize their benefits.
