293 jobs made available in Nickel Belt through the Canada Summer Jobs program
June 26, 2023

Many young Canadians look to secure meaningful work experience during the summer. They know that getting a foot in the right door can serve as a valuable steppingstone to a successful career. Not only does it allow a young person to build work experience and develop new skills, but it also puts money in their pocket to cover expenses, save for the future, or fund further education.

Today, Marc G. Serré, the Member of Parliament for Nickel Belt and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Official Languages, on behalf of the Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, Marci Ien, announced $964,290 in Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) funding for the riding of Nickel Belt.

This funding has enabled the creation of 293 quality job opportunities through 102 unique employers throughout the Nickel Belt/Greater Sudbury riding. Some of the organizations include the Azilda Greenhouses, Au Chateau home in West Nipissing, the Northwest Fudge Factory in Levac, Turtle Pond Wildlife Centre in Val Caron, and many more. This announcement builds upon the success of CSJ which has continually offered great opportunities for youth and helped local employers in a multitude of sectors during peak seasons.

The program prioritizes projects that support youth who face barriers to employment. This includes youth with disabilities and Indigenous youth, as well as Black and other racialized youth. By providing all young people with equitable opportunities to develop their skills, Canada Summer Jobs can help them to succeed in the job market.

Since 2016, Nickel Belt – Greater Sudbury has received nearly $5.5 million dollars in CSJ funding.

Quotes

“The Canada Summer Jobs program is more than just an employment program; it’s an investment in the potential of young Canadians and in the economic vitality of our communities. This program gives thousands of employers the opportunity to meet their staffing needs over the summer, and it gives youth valuable work experience that will set them up for a lifetime of success in the job market. It’s a win‑win for employers and young people across Canada.” – Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, Marci Ien

“Once again the Canada Summer Jobs program is providing valuable work experience to youth here in Nickel Belt / Greater Sudbury and across the country. CSJ is also a key in helping retain youth in the North and to allow them to immerse themselves in the local employment scene. Encouraging all who are still looking for quality work experiences to visit the job bank and match themselves to an opportunity in Nickel Belt- Greater Sudbury! ”- Marc G. Serré, MP for Nickel Belt and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Official Languages

“I am delighted that funding from Canada Summer Jobs will enable the creation of so many summer employment positions across Greater Sudbury. These opportunities provide young people with significant work experience in a variety of sectors, while simultaneously supporting local economic development and highlighting the good work of community organizations.” – Paul Lefebvre, Mayor of Greater Sudbury

“The Onaping Falls Recreation Committee has been honoured to receive funding through Canada Summer Jobs for the past 5 years. Without receiving this funding for our summer students, we would not be able to open the A.Y. Jackson Lookout, our main tourist attraction in Onaping Falls and one of the Greater City of Sudbury's top 10 attractions. Our summer students will take the experience and the memories of their summer job at this beautiful Northern Ontario waterfall and tourist destination with them throughout their lives. Our experience has been very positive, and we look forward to working with Canada Summer Jobs in the future.” - Carrie Morin and Dolly Gordon-Andrews, A.Y. Jackson Administrative Leaders
