Over $1.6 million to support youth jobs and help employers in Nickel Belt – Greater Sudbury through the Canada Summer Jobs Program
June 29, 2022

NICKEL BELT-GREATER SUDBURY – Young people across Canada – particularly those facing barriers to employment – have been acutely affected by the loss of jobs caused by the pandemic. Recognizing that the energy and talent of young people is a powerful engine for our economic recovery, the government is working with employers across the country to help them find meaningful, high-quality jobs.

Today, Marc G. Serré, MP for Nickel Belt and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Official Languages, made announcement on behalf of Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, Marci Ien regarding the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) Program.

This year the Nickel Belt region received an investment of more than $1.6 million through CSJ, allowing for the creation of 569 quality job opportunities through 133 unique employers throughout the Nickel Belt/Greater Sudbury riding. This announcement builds upon the success of CSJ which has continually offered great opportunities for youth to build their resumes and gain valuable skills while simultaneously helping employers fil gaps, especially through peak periods in the summer.

CSJ is also prioritizing projects that support youth who have not completed high school or who are not currently enrolled in an education or training program, as well as Black, Indigenous and racialized young people, youth with disabilities, and youth from the LGBTQ2+ community. By providing all youth equitable opportunities to develop their skills, CSJ can help them to succeed in the job market.

Throughout the summer, young people can find new job opportunities in their community on jobbank.gc.ca/youth and the Job Bank mobile app. More than 140,000 quality CSJ placements are now available across the country for young people between the ages of 15 and 30.

Since 2016, Nickel Belt – Greater Sudbury has received over $4.5 million dollars in CSJ funding. This has benefitted local business owners from a multitude of sectors and helped youth gain valuable experience.

Today’s announcement builds on the government’s ongoing actions taken to support all Canadians, as highlighted in Budget 2022, which is about growing Canada's economy, creating good jobs, and building a Canada where nobody gets left behind. It is also in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 8, which aims to promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.

Quotes

“Since day one, even before I was elected, I made a commitment to amplify the diverse voices of youth. No matter the age, gender or cultural background – I continue to be moved every time I meet with youth advocates. Canada Summer Jobs supports the incredible talent and leadership of youth who are already at the centre of change. There is no doubt that when given the right tools to succeed, youth create purposeful innovation.” – Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, Marci Ien

“I’m so pleased to see over $1.6 million flowing to Nickel Belt – Greater Sudbury through the Canada Summer Jobs program. This funding will directly impact 133 organizations and over 500 individuals. Youth have shown resilience through the COVID-19 pandemic and going forward, there’s been a great sense of duty to help them find new opportunities to pave their path forward. I’ve seen firsthand the positive benefit this program also has for employers and the not-for-profit sector- it is a true win-win situation. CSJ is also a key in helping retain youth in the North and to allow them to immerse themselves in the local employment scene. Encouraging all who are still looking for quality work experiences to visit the job bank and match themselves to an opportunity in Nickel Belt- Greater Sudbury! ”– Marc G. Serré, MP for Nickel Belt and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Natural Resources

“We are extremely happy to be part of the Canada Summer Job Program. This gives us the opportunity to hire students who are flexible and who can help us with new projects or completing existing projects. The students develop skills, build their confidence, get paid work experience to a successful transition into the labour market. This is good for my company by saving yearly salaries and lower recruitment and training costs.” – Kris Berthelot, Owner of KD Farm & Feed and Canada Summer Jobs Employer Funding Recipient
