NICKEL BELT – GREATER SUDBURY - Investing in early learning and child care isn’t just good for kids, or good for parents and caregivers, it’s also essential to our economic recovery. MP Serré has been actively engaged and consulting with organizations, residents, Chambers of Commerce and stakeholders to understand the urgent needs surrounding childcare.
Increases in living costs are a challenge for many and reducing fees for child care can help more Canadians keep money in their pockets. Recognizing this, the Federal government is following through on its commitment to deliver $10 a day child care across Canada.
Although child care falls under provincial jurisdiction, the Federal government acknowledges it has an important role to play. This week, the Honourable Karina Gould Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, joined the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister to announce a joint federal provincial child care agreement had finally been reached with Alberta. Great news for Albertan families and widely praised by the child care community.
Alberta has become the ninth jurisdiction to sign on to the Canada-wide system, meaning that now nearly 60% of all Canadian children are eligible to receive federal support through this initiative. MP Serré is optimistic, but worries about the delay on an action plan from the Government of Ontario to finalize an agreement which would directly support Nickel Belt – Greater Sudbury families, caregivers and businesses across the province.
“Our government has been working hard to implement this framework in accordance to the priorities set forward by the people of this country and I commend the incredible accomplishments made so far. Ontario deserves the same, and a fair deal is on the table. It is very concerning to see provincial counterpart’s negative approach causing delays versus much needed action. They must realize what is at stake and how critical it is to have this agreement in place,” said Serré.
“There is overwhelming support and much anticipation from local residents, stakeholders, Chambers of Commerce and the business community for the $10 a day daycare agreement to be signed. They envision and , the positive impact this program will have. In order to grow a strong economy, we need everyone to be able to fully participate- that includes those who are staying home with children because the cost of child care is just too high,” he added.
“The agreement will also assist critical services and support early childhood educators, including through the development of a wage grid. Consideration has been given to ensure that Indigenous voices and children with disabilities fit into the framework to ensure inclusivity and accessibility for all. I choose to have faith that the province will realize that this collaboration is paramount, and we cannot afford inaction. We must put political differences aside and put people first- that’s what constituents have asked for and that’s what they deserve. I encourage Nickel Belt – Greater Sudbury residents to use their voices and add their perspective on the matter,” concluded Serré.
