MP Serré announces $48,000 in funding to support 5 Nickel Belt – Greater Sudbury Royal Canadian Legion Branches
January 29, 2021

NICKEL BELT – GREATER SUDBURY- Today, MP for Nickel Belt – Greater Sudbury Marc G. Serré announced nearly $50,000 in funding from the Government of Canada to support 5 local Royal Canadian Legion (RCL) Branches on behalf of the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence. This funding will assist local Royal Canadian Legions with their operational costs so they can continue providing important support for Veterans.

The Veterans Organizations Emergency Support Fund is part of Canada’s COVID-19 Economic Response Plan to protect jobs, provide emergency support and keep businesses afloat through the pandemic. Organizations such as local Nickel Belt – Greater Sudbury RCL Branches play a critical role in the well-being of Veterans, their families and the community.

In November, the Government of Canada provided $14 million to the Royal Canadian Legion’s Dominion Command to allow for the rapid distribution of financial support / aid to individual branches across the country. Dominion Command was responsible for determining which branches would receive funding.

Organizations receiving these funds will have access to the support they need to replace charitable and other revenue lost because of the pandemic and will be able to continue their work with Veterans and their families during a time when it is needed most.

 Quotes

“Local Legions have continued to play a vital role in the wellbeing of our communities through this pandemic. They have provided meals to vulnerable residents, held safe fundraisers and have offered moral support to veterans and their families through these trying times. This funding will help offset the challenges that operational costs and other expenses have in spite of a reduction in income from events and other initiatives. Thank you to all Legion volunteers and their members for their important and impactful roles in our communities.” – Marc G. Serré, MP Nickel Belt

"Lockerby Legion Branch 564 is very grateful for the financial assistance provided by Marc Serré, MP for Nickel Belt and Veterans Affairs Canada. We are in receipt of $10,845.00 through the Veterans Organizations Emergency Support Fund.  These funds will assist in meeting our operational expenses while we are under a provincial shutdown and ensure we continue to support Veterans and their loved ones who are in need of assistance." - Jennifer Huard, President, Lockerby Legion Branch 564

“We are using the funds from The Veterans Organizations Emergency Support Fund to be able to keep our doors open and our bills paid, so we can continue to support our veterans and our community.” - Gary Batchelor, Acting President Capreol Royal Canadian Legion Branch 179
