October 15, 2020

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #564 receives funding through Veterans Affairs Canada’s Commemorative Partnership Program

NICKEL BELT – GREATER SUDBURY- The Government of Canada is dedicated to commemorating the sacrifices of the brave men and women who have served Canada in uniform. We continue to preserve their legacy and recognize their contributions and sacrifices as a way to pass the torch of remembrance to future generations.

Marc G. Serré, Member of Parliament for Nickel Belt, today announced Government of Canada funding to build Lockerby Remembers – Cenotaph Memorial Park in memory of local residents who served in Canada’s armed forces. MP Serré made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence.

This project is an expansion to the existing memorial that pays tribute to the service of community members. The expansion will include two memorial walls inscribed with the names of the 262 members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #564 who have served.

The existing cenotaph will be temporarily relocated during the expansion and remounted on a platform once the walls have been constructed. There will also be two new flagpoles installed around the monument in addition to landscaping with grass, flowers, shrubs and trees to make the area a green space as well.

This memorial will be accessible for Veterans with mobility issues by incorporating paver stone walkways and platforms. The memorial is not only symbolic in honouring Veterans and fostering remembrance but serves as a gathering place for veterans, service personnel, members, civic leaders, the community, and local cadet corps to participate in acts of remembrance throughout the year to ensure we never forget.   Youth can also take inspiration. On an annual basis, the names of recently deceased veterans will be added to the memorial wall and honoured during an act of remembrance.” - Jennifer Huard, Lockerby Legion Branch 564 President
