MP Serré announces $63,000 in FedNor funding for youth internships in Nickel Belt - Greater Sudbury
July 15, 2020

NICKEL BELT – GREATER SUDBURY- The future of Northern Ontario’s economy relies on the talent and skills of our young people. From high school students starting small summer enterprises to college and university graduates leading promising start-ups, youth in the region are critical to continued growth and success, and the Government of Canada is there to support them.

As nations around the world celebrate World Youth Skills Day, the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages announced more than $3.9 million in federal investments to support youth initiatives and young entrepreneurs across Northern Ontario. MP Marc G. Serré is happy to announce that $63,000 will be flowing directly to Nickel Belt – Greater Sudbury to support the creation of two youth positions here in the region.

Delivered by FedNor, this funding will support the Wahnapitae First Nation and the West Nipissing Chamber of Commerce to each hire a youth intern. In Wahnapitae First Nation the intern will focus on the implementation of several priority projects for the community. The West Nipissing Chamber of Commerce intern will develop a Business Visitation program that will identify the needs of local businesses and develop strategies to support growth and sustainability efforts.

Today’s announcement is further proof of the Government of Canada’s commitment to supporting young entrepreneurs through this difficult time. Helping young people acquire essential on-the-job training or navigate their way through a career in entrepreneurship will help set Northern Ontario on a course for future prosperity. Initiatives like these will only become more important as our economy rebuilds and evolves in the years to come.

Quotes

“The energy and ingenuity of young Canadians are critical to the success of our economy – not just in the future, but right now. We know that young entrepreneurs have been hit hard by COVID-19, and we stand with them. Our message to them is clear: we’ve been here for you with immediate measures, we’re here for you now as our economy reopens and we’ll get through this, together. We’re working with you to create more jobs for young people and help our economy come back stronger.” – The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages and Minister responsible for FedNor

“By investing in youth initiatives in Northern Ontario we stand to build a stronger future socially and economically. Continued funding from FedNor has enabled mutually beneficial opportunities for employers to hire dynamic and ambitious youth and for interns to develop their skills and further their work experience while making a difference locally. I look forward to learning of the benefits of these projects and will continue to advocate for funding to support our youth and local enterprises in Nickel Belt – Greater Sudbury which will in turn help strengthen our local economies!" Marc G. Serré MP Nickel Belt

“The West Nipissing Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce we have received a $31,500 Fednor grant for a youth internship position. The intern’s role will be to assist in the “development of a business visitation program” that will entail determining the needs of local businesses and developing opportunities to meet those needs. The global pandemic has unfortunately put many businesses in a difficult crisis; therefore more than ever, we need to assist local businesses in staying strong along with our community.” – President of the West Nipissing Chamber of Commerce, Joanne Vallière
