Government of Canada invests in local infrastructure to support private sector development in Coniston

August 7, 2019 – Nickel Belt- Greater Sudbury, ON — People, businesses and communities throughout Nickel Belt- Greater Sudbury are one step closer to capitalizing on new growth and job opportunities thanks to a Government of Canada investment of more than $507,000. The FedNor funding will enable the City of Greater Sudbury to upgrade, extend and connect municipal infrastructure to support the development of a new private sector industrial business park in Coniston.

Marc Serré, Member of Parliament for Nickel Belt, made the announcement today on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for FedNor.

With the goal of attracting new domestic and international businesses to the community, this strategic investment will allow the City of Greater Sudbury to excavate and replace 900 meters of city-owned water lines with higher capacity pipes. Identified as a local priority, the infrastructure upgrade is necessary to create much-needed industrial space to accommodate new or expanding businesses, as well as large-scale industrial development.

This announcement builds upon the nearly $2 million invested by the federal government to the City of Greater Sudbury in 2017, which enabled the upgrade of the wastewater system and community roads in Coniston. Creating the right environment for the economy to grow remains a priority for residents and businesses alike, and this new contribution represents a true commitment to the prosperity of Coniston and the Nickel Belt-Greater Sudbury region.

• This investment is provided through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program, which supports projects that promote sustainable community economic development, enhance business development and growth, and facilitate innovation.

• Since 2016 and through successive budgets, the Government of Canada has earmarked an additional $62 million for FedNor in support of various initiatives to enable the organization to further strengthen Northern Ontario’s economy and create even more middle-class jobs for Canadians.

• Since December 2015, FedNor approved more than $230 million in support of 650 projects in Northern Ontario, which leveraged more than an additional $400 million from other sources.
